10 Rules of Thumb for Remote Working

When Covid-19 restrictions forced many people to work from home, it seemed to be just a temporary situation. But now, the option to continue working remotely is gaining popularity among employers and employees.

These tips can help you stay productive and maintain balance.

1. Set regular hours

Having clear guidelines for when to work and when to call it a day helps to keep balance in your life. One of the best benefits of remote work is flexibility… when allows it. But, in the other hand, you need to have clearness of your working processes. For example, if you feel high productivity between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m., don’t schedule meetings during that time.

2. Set limits with your family members

Make it very clear to your family and others: work has to be done (but don’t forget flexibility). Let them know that you’ll need quiet time to do your job. Try outlining a schedule for children and anyone else at home during the time you’re at work.

3. Get dressed for work (not pajamas, please)

You don’t have to dress in an elegant manner.

But consider it: dressing professionally (at least to the «corporate casual» level) will make you feel more professional and your performance will be better. Keep the pajamas and sweatshirts for the weekend.

4. Invest in your workspace

Get everything you need to be well-equipped. Get the fastest possible internet speed. Install virtual collaboration software. You can even invest in a new chair, desk, or computer.

5. Schedule breaks

If you’re self-employed or work for an organization, give yourself adequate time during the day to walk away from the computer screen and phone.

6. And eventually leave home

Get out of the house and move your body for a better blood circulation. Get some fresh air and sunlight!

7. Try to socialize with co-workers

Don’t let loneliness and isolation become a problem in your remote work life. Look for colleagues to talk about common interests at least for a few minutes.

8. Don’t be too hard with yourself

If you are working one minute and looking for holidays the next, don’t feel guilty. Plus, we need to extend this same kindness and forgiving attitude to our co-workers, clients, and bosses. We have to consider what another person is going through not only in life, but also in their home work environment.

9. Provide recognition to others

Try to send support or gratitude words to colleagues for a job well done; this can help foster a strong sense of community. Frequent recognition can help boost morale and engagement.

10. Look for training opportunities

Training should not be forgotten just because you are at home. Maybe you are missing the training and development courses. Or maybe it would be very convenient for your career to improve your English. At any time, the moment to do business online in English can happen and it is best to be updated. Talk to your boss or find a solution online.

Remote work can seem like a challenge, but by following these tips, surely you will survive as a good remote worker!
